How to Convert Degrees to Compass Directions
Navigating with a map and compass requires understanding how the 360 degrees of a circle map onto the named directions of the compass rose. While degrees offer mathematical precision, human communication relies on cardinal (North, South, East, West) and ordinal (Northeast, Southwest) directions.
To manually convert a degree to a direction, you divide the 360° circle into equal slices. For standard navigation, we use a 16-point compass rose, meaning each directional "slice" is exactly 22.5° wide (360 ÷ 16).
